Transforming Harpenden Public Halls into a Vibrant, Welcoming Community Church.
The Harpenden Public Halls are being reimagined as a dynamic, inviting space for the community, blending modern design with the warmth of a welcoming church environment.
WELL CONSIDERED LAYOUTS
With minimal changes yet maximum impact, the building has been transformed to effectively meet the church's needs. Enhancing functionality and creating a more welcoming environment are at the core of these updates. Opening up the entrance area establishes a more inviting entry experience. In the Small Hall an acoustic bi-folding partition is introduced, allowing the space to be divided into two flexible areas to support a variety of activities. Adjacent to the stage, the removal of partition walls transforms these spaces into versatile Sunday School rooms, while the stage itself is retained as a large gathering area for all ages before groups disperse into smaller sessions. Additionally, the gap between the Creche and Storage has been filled, enabling the Sunday School to circulate around the building without needing to pass through the Main Hall. These thoughtful changes enhance adaptability while maintaining a cohesive and harmonious design.
On the first floor, the rooms above the entrance lobby have been reconfigured into one larger office space. The flat will be refurbished to serve as additional staff offices offering flexibility for future use.
In the basement, a large, open space will be designated for youth activities, providing a dedicated area for their needs.
A WELCOMING ENTRANCE EXPERIENCE
The entrance space has been thoughtfully designed to serve as both a café and reception area, offering a warm and inviting atmosphere. Large windows facing the Common flood the space with natural light, creating a bright and uplifting experience for visitors and members of the congregation alike.
A REFINED, FUNCTIONAL MATERIAL PALETTE
The material palette embraces warm, natural tones. Acoustic wooden panels at low level add warmth and character, aligning with the café bar and reception desk while minimising material use. Engineered wood boards are used for flooring to complement the panels.
COMFORTABLE STAFF SPACES
The upstairs area, dedicated to staff offices, is designed for comfort and cohesion. A low datum, matching the floor’s color, creates a unified look consistent with the lobby design. Enlarged windows maximise daylight and offer beautiful views of the Common.
