Transformation of a dated 1920s home into a tactile, light-filled space.
The original three-bedroom house had a cramped ground-floor flow, with the kitchen only accessible to the dining room through the living area. Our redesign aimed to open up the downstairs into a cohesive, open-plan space and add two bedrooms upstairs. The rear extension features a simple yet striking design: two flanking walls with sliding doors, topped by a birch plywood and glulam ‘canopy’ roof, which enhances kitchen height and bathes the area in natural light through a large skylight.
On the side, we expanded the structure over three floors, adding a new first-floor bedroom and a staircase leading to a spacious attic bedroom with an en-suite.
SEAMLESS DETAILS
The stair handrail and utility wall seamlessly wrap into the tall kitchen cupboards. Plywood louvres conceal a hidden pivot door to the utility room and downstairs toilet, maintaining aesthetic continuity.
INNOVATIVE USE OF MATERIALS
In a UK-first, exposed clayblocks were chosen for the extension walls, showcasing their distinctive texture and soft pastel hues. When paired with birch plywood ceilings, glulam beams, and cork flooring, the result is a space that radiates natural warmth, earthy charm, and tactile beauty.
PLAYFUL INSERTIONS OF WOOD
A passion for woodworking is woven into every corner of the home, with timber elements adding warmth, cohesion, and character. Sleek plywood frames tie the design together, while custom-built kids’ beds include a whimsical hidden reading nook—perfect for sparking imagination and play.
